Doctor of Philosophy

The doctoral program in East Asian Studies offers a focus on China or Japan, including the modern history, literature, linguistics, and religion and thought of both cultures. For admission, you must have the support of one faculty member from the general area of your work. Students with a B.A. may be admitted directly into the Ph.D. program if they show exceptional promise and have strong backing from at least one faculty member. In such cases, you are responsible for fulfilling all normal requirements for the East Asian Studies M.A. program before beginning work for the Ph.D.
