Students must pass two comprehensive exams at the end of the program's first year. The exams cover a summary of topics in Econometrics and in Microeconomic Theory. If a student fails one or both exams, they are allowed to retake. If a student fails one or both exams for a second time, they will be discontinued from the PhD program. If a student does not already have a Master's Degree in Economics, they may stay one additional semester to finish the credits required for a Master's Degree.
Students must enroll in a minor. They may take an Economics minor if they wish (9 units of 696 class credit as listed above), or take a minor in another department. If they decide to take a minor in another department, they must get the permission of their advisor.
