Program Description

The Graduate Certificate in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provides students with a unique opportunity to serve their community while simultaneously working towards a future career in medicine or public health. This is a unique program that combines a more traditional educational component with an innovative clinical component. Students will provide clinical care as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Basic providing 9-1-1 transports, interfacility transports, and special events coverage with Global Medical Response, while completing graduate-level coursework in the field of EMS and Public Health. The synergistic relationship between these dual experiences will provide our students with an unparalleled experience.

The certificate program is designed for students who have already obtained a Bachelor¿s degree and anticipate matriculation into a professional or graduate level training program within one to two years and works to augment the competitiveness of their application, particularly those working to become a physician or physician assistant (PA). The experiences gained through participation in this program will allow students to succeed in their future careers by providing a strong clinical foundation on which to anchor their educational experiences. The focus of the program is gaining competencies and skills needed to practice as a high-performing clinician. Students will explore the role of EMTs within the emergency medical system and their intersection with public health, bioethics, and implementation sciences.

Through completion of the certificate program, students will be exceptionally well-positioned to excel in professional schools, to practice as high-performing EMS clinicians, and to be qualified EMS instructors in the state of Arizona. Students may also choose to pursue a Master¿s in Public Health upon completion of the certificate and certificate coursework will count towards that degree.

Learning Outcomes

- Practice the responsibilities of an EMT in the clinical setting, including legal and ethical responsibilities.
- Integrate foundations of clinical management and apply them through a public health lens to address current gaps in the prehospital setting.
