Additional Comments

  • Students must develop expertise in the subject matter of one of the subfields covered by the School.

  • Students must also develop expertise in a minor field of study. The student may select a minor from among those offered in the School or from any appropriate PhD minor offered at the University of Arizona.

  • Maintain an overall grade point average of no less than 3.5 in all graduate course work (calculated at the end of each year).

  • Minimum requirements are: six semesters of full-time graduate study; 18-24 units of coursework in the major subject area, 12 units in the minor subject area (or 16 if minoring in research methods), and 18 units of dissertation. Most students complete 100+ units.

Completion requirement

A SGPP minor is available. Students can minor in one of five subfields (Public Policy and Management [PPM], American Politics [AP], Comparative Politics [CP], International Relations [IR], or Research Methods). With the exception of Research Methods, each of these subfields requires the completion of 12 units. PPM requires three core courses plus one elective, while AP, CP, and IR require one core course plus three electives. A minor in Research Methods requires the completion of 16 units: four core courses plus two electives.
