Program Description

Dedicated to helping others? Embark on a fulfilling profession that's devoted to improving the quality of life and health for children, adolescents, adults and families. The Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Science prepares students for careers and graduate training in a variety of fields, such as human services, social policy, community and public health, counseling, social work, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, gerontology, child/elder advocacy, criminal justice/law, and child life specialist professions. Students explore topics such as adolescence, child development, family relationships, mental health, counseling and youth programs in both traditional classroom settings and real-world situations. During the program, each student partners with faculty to acquire firsthand experience working with families and individuals in many contexts. Additionally, the program offers a network of community agencies that provide internships and hands-on learning to ensure that, upon graduation, students are well equipped to meet challenges head-on.

- Foundational Knowledge in Human Development and Family Science; Broad knowledge of theories, issues, research findings, and their applications in family science and human development.
- Statistics and Research Methods; Basic knowledge of and ability to apply statistical analysis procedures and research methods for the study of families and human development.
- Critical Thinking; Ability to critically analyze and evaluate theoretical perspectives and research findings in the field of family science and human development.
- Written Communication; Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using style appropriate to the discipline.
- Oral Communication; Effective oral communication skills for a variety of audiences.
