Program Description

Health and Human Values integrates the social sciences and humanities to provide a holistic understanding of the biological, social, and cultural complexities of health and medicine. Students learn to think like social scientists and humanists enabling them to effectively grapple with the most daunting social, cultural, and ethical issues facing medical science and health care today. HHV fosters the development of skills and habits of mind that are critical for success in health care settings that are defined by diversity and complexity. Students learn how to question their assumptions, identify their internal biases, and engage in ethical reasoning and decision-making. This prepares them to work effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural health care settings where empathy and the ability to relate to others are essential to skillful communication and creative problem-solving.
