Core coursework: 695K Historiography is required for all students in the first year (3 units, minimum grade required: B).
36 units of course work are required in major field; which courses qualify is determined by the student in consultation with their committee. 

18 units (minimum) of dissertation research credit.

Language requirements: A reading knowledge of two second languages is required, except in United States History, where one language is required. The requirement must be completed BEFORE the written/oral comprehensive examination.

English proficiency is one of the conditions for admission for all applicants whose native language is not English.

Other requirements: Each student must pass written exams in major and minor fields, followed by an oral comprehensive exam. Following the completion of the dissertation, students must pass an oral defense of the project.

(9-12) Nine to twelve units in the minor field selected in conjunction with the student's committee.  Students will take either 12 units of a mixture of 500 and 600-level courses, or 9 units if all courses are taken at the 600 level.  The courses below are a representative selection of what students might take:
