Emphasis Core Coursework Requirements

SJD students are required to take:

  • course: Federal Indian Law (3)

  • course: International Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples (2)

Additionally, international students must complete:

  • course: Legal Analysis, Writing, and Research  (2)

  • course: Introduction to the U.S. Legal System (2)

After their year in residency, SJD students must work with their dissertation faculty chair to enroll in dissertation credits. The SJD student must work with the IPLP faculty advisor to determine the appropriate number of dissertation credits.

The SJD program is designed to be flexible and students must work with their faculty advisor to determine which electives courses to take. Examples of courses include:

Additional Emphasis Requirements

Upon completion of the one-year residency requirement, candidates spend one to two years completing their dissertation and related research. Students must fully complete all degree requirements no later than three years after the end of their year in residence. See handbook (below) for additional information on the dissertation.
