A total of 63 graduate units are required for completion of the Ph.D. program in Mexican American Studies. All required units of credit must be at the graduate level at the University of Arizona or at an accredited institution in consultation with the MAS Advisor.

With approval from the advisor/DGS, students may take courses in other subjects that relate to their research/dissertation topic.

Qualifying Exam – administered during student's 2nd academic year (usually during fall semester)
Comprehensive Exam (Written and Oral) – administered between the end of the 3rd and the 4th year. This exam is a two part where the student is give at least four prompts (depending on how many committee members they have) and is required to provide essay responses to which it will be evaluated by their committee. If the student passes, they will move on to an Oral Exam which will be a follow up of the written prompts before the committee.
Prospectus – administered at least one semester after the passing of the comprehensive exam. This assessment is where the student will confirm their dissertation question/topic, provided research method/approach and where the committee can provide feedback. Has to get approval before starting any work on the dissertation.
Dissertation Defense – administered between the end of the 5th year and on, depending on the sample size, research being conducted, IRB approval, and submission of final draft to Advisor for review.
Minor: 9 units minimum
Students minoring in MAS will be required to complete 12 units. Minors outside of MAS must be relevant to the dissertation topic and must be approved by the advisor/DGS before registering for it.
