Fall semester
Choose one of two classes, such as:
HED 634, Sociology of Community Colleges (3 Units) with Dr. Regina Deil-Amen
EDL 625, Diversity in Leadership (3 Units) with Dr. John Taylor
Each of these classes is focused on providing students with an historical and social context for understanding the strategic management practices of community colleges in developing performance-funding mechanisms. The new generation of leadership in colleges and schools needs to be particularly sensitive to the ways in which their current work intersects with regard to the historical contributions of and changes in community colleges, as well as with the important local demographic, cultural, and economic contexts of the communities the college is serving.
Spring semester
Choose one of three doctoral classes, such as:
HED 609, Organization and Administration in Higher Education 3 Units with Dr. Gary Rhoades
EDL 606, Educational Policy 3 Units with Dr. John Taylor
EDL 627, Curriculum and Cultural Politics 3 Units with Dr. Rose Ylimaki
Choose a guided research internship, starting in the Fall and ending in either the Spring or the following Fall. Students will have the opportunity of participating in an authentic, high level applied research/policy implementation project, in Maricopa Community College District, in Phoenix Union High School District, or in a P-20 internship that cuts across K-12 and postsecondary education. For example, in 2012-2013, the Maricopa Community College District had a Lumina grant to develop performance based funding metrics appropriate to community colleges. In 2013-2014, there will be an increasing focus on college readiness, in ways that across the schools and postsecondary education worlds.
The particular topics, focus, and projects for the guided research internship will necessarily vary depending on the particular interests of the partner districts, and on whatever key policy developments are unfolding.
