Advanced Practice-Based Dissertation

The purpose of the dissertation is to produce a project with deliverables and scholarship that directly benefit an organization and will advance maternal and child health (MCH concentration) or address a public health policy goal (PHPM concentration). A student must complete 18 dissertation credit hours to ensure that they are dedicating time and making progress on this substantial project. This equates to approximately 40 hours a week for 20 weeks.

The DrPH dissertation will be conducted within the context of a public health agency with the goal of developing a resource for the agency or general public. The advanced practice-based dissertation must investigate a significant public health problem. While the collection of new data is not required, the candidate must demonstrate sophisticated independent analysis.

Program Prerequisite

Five MPH core courses are prerequisites for admission to the DrPH program (EPID 573a, PHPM 574, EHS 575, BIOS 576a, and HPS 577, or their equivalents).

Applying previously earned/transfer work

A maximum of 18 units of previously earned course work may be applied to the degree requirements for this program and should be less than 10 years old at the time the student begins the program.

The minor area of study can be in other academic doctoral programs in Public Health or in other doctoral programs throughout the university. However, DrPH students may not minor in the general Public Health Doctoral Minor. The minor area of study specifies the number of required minor units (minimum = 9 units).
