Overall LLL Track Core Coursework Requirements:

  • course: Advanced Topics in Russian Language, Literature and Linguistics:

    • Structure of Russian (3 units)

    • Advanced Reading (3 units)**

    • Oral Communication (6 units)**

  • course: History of the Russian Language (3 units)

  • One other RSSS Russian linguistics course (3 units)

  • course: Topics in Slavic Literature and Culture (3 units)

  • course:19th Century Russian Literature (3 units)

  • course: 20th Century Russian Literature (3 units)

Overall REES Track Core Coursework Requirements:

  • course: Advanced Topics in Russian Language, Literature and Linguistics:

    • Structure of Russian (3 units)

    • Advanced Reading (3 units)**

    • Oral Communication (6 units)**

  • course: Great Authors of the 19th Century (3 units) OR course:19th Century Russian Literature (3 units)

  • course: Great Authors of the 20th Century (3 units) OR course: 20th Century Russian Literature (3 units)

  • course: Topics in Slavic Literature and Culture (3 units)

  • course: Thesis (3 or 6 units)

Language requirements: * If the computerized language placement exam and oral interview warrant, the student may be required to take during the first year other appropriate language coursework. In this case, course Structure of Russian would be taken during the second year.
** Students judged to have native-level Russian language proficiency will replace course Advanced Reading and course Oral Communication with other coursework approved by the Graduate Advisor/Director of Graduate Studies.

Completion requirement

LLL Track Elective Coursework:

6 units of approved electives, 3 units of which are to be course for students who wish to serve as GATs in language classrooms.
If an optional thesis will be done, 3 or 6 units of course Thesis. In the LLL track these 3 or 6 units of course may count as elective units toward the MA degree.

REES Track Elective Coursework:

15 units of approved electives, 3 units of which are to be course for students who wish to serve as GATs in language classrooms. 3 of these units, not counting course, must be taken from among departmental offerings.

All elective courses are to be selected in consultation with and approved by the Director of Graduate Studies.

Possible/recommended elective courses include, but are not restricted to the following.

Comprehensive Examination (Language, Literature and Linguistics Track)

MA Thesis (Russian and East European Studies Track)
Other requirements: All coursework requirements must be completed with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
No more than 6 units of Independent Study coursework will be counted toward the MA degree requirements.
