Doctoral students who major in a department other than Sociology may select 12 units from the following core courses:

*Sociology PhD students will list all core courses as part of the major. Sociology students must select 12 units of coursework from the list of electives and advanced methods courses. 

SOC 500A: Sociological Theory (3 units)

SOC 570A: Social Statistics I (3 units)

SOC 570B: Social Statistics (3 units)

SOC 575: Advanced Social Research Methods (3 units)

SOC 595A: Study in Sociology (1 unit)

SOC 595B: Presentation Seminar (1 unit)

SOC 596C: Teaching Practicum (1 unit)

Minimum GPA required: 3.5

Comprehensive Examinations

Doctoral students who major in a department other than Sociology must succesfuly pass one written comprehensive examination in one substantive area of sociology and pass the oral examination.

Advisor

All students must have a minor advisor on the school faculty, who will approve the student’s minor program of study. The minor advisor is usually a faculty member with whom the student has taken a course, and also the faculty member who administers the exam (although this is not required). Students should consult with the DGS about identifying a minor advisor.

Coursework

All students, Sociology or non-Sociology, must take 12 units of coursework within the School of Sociology.

Transfer Courses

Transfer courses from other universities cannot be applied to the minor.
