Program Description

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a PhD minor to students enrolled in doctoral programs outside the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

The PhD Minor consists of nine or more units (three or more graduate courses) with the SPAN or PORT designation, taken at the University of Arizona--these are graduate-level courses offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Furthermore, one faculty member from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese must represent the PhD Minor in the student's PhD Examination; in other words, at least one faculty member from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese must be a member of the student's PhD Examination Committee.

The selection of a minor must be approved by the student's major graduate advisor and must be included in the student's Plan of Study.

Before admission to degree candidacy, the doctoral student must pass a written and an oral PhD Examination on the student's comprehensive knowledge of the major and minor subjects of study, both in breadth across the general fields of study and in depth within the areas of specialization. Should the student change a minor subject following the PhD Examination, the student must take a new comprehensive exam covering the new minor.
