We offer a thesis- and a non-thesis MS track. Both degree tracks require 30 units of graduate level coursework. All Environmental Engineering MS students are required to take 14 units of core courses at the University of Arizona or an approved equivalent elsewhere. The core courses are:
course: Water Chemistry for Engineers (3)
course: Fate and Transport Processes in Environmental Engineering (3)
course: Water Treatment Systems Design (3)
course: Wastewater Treatment Design System (3)
course: Chemical Engineering (1) - Students must enroll each semester; minimum of 2 units required.
Thesis Students
course: Thesis (4)
Non-Thesis Students
course: Masters Report (4)
12 units of electives are required to complete the program, six (6) units of which must be from the list below. Elective courses are determined at the discretion of the individual student and the student's faculty advisor, usually relevant to the student's research. CHEE courses that may serve as electives include:
course*: Sustainable Water Supplies for Remote Communities (3)
course: Emerging Issues in Water Quality (3)
course: Bioremediation on Inorganic Contaminants (2)
course: Interfacial Chemistry of Biomolecules in Environmental Systems (3)
course: Introduction to Hazardous Waste Management (3)
course: Analysis of Emerging Environmental Contaminants (3)
course: Water Reuse (3)
course*: Advanced Water and Wastewater Treatment (3)
* Students who have taken course and course in lieu of other required core courses will choose different elective courses.
The additional six (6) units of electives may be taken from a combination of electives, research and independent study courses at the discretion of the student and the student's faculty advisor/mentor.
Elective courses are determined at the discretion of the individual student and the student's faculty advisor/mentor, usually relevant to the student's research.
All CHEE graduate students are required to register and attend course, the CHEE Graduate Seminar (1), each semester that they are in the program.
Please refer to the Graduate Student Handbook for students who are pursuing this program of study.

Core Coursework Requirements
The AMP Environmental Engineering can be either thesis or non-thesis and will follow the same requirements of the regular MS program. After admission into the AMP Environmental Engineering program, students must select a faculty advisor/mentor who will guide the student’s research or development work toward the completion of a thesis or master’s report.
Core coursework: 14 units of required courses:
course: Water Chemistry for Engineers (3)
course: Fate and Transport Processes in Environmental Engineering (3)
course: Water Treatment Systems Design (3)
course*: Wastewater Treatment Design System (3)
course: Chemical Engineering (1) - Students must enroll each semester; minimum of 2 units required.
* Because Environmental Engineering undergraduate students take CHEE 476 Wastewater Treatment System Design in their junior year, they will take course: Advanced Water and Wastewater Treatment, as a core course during their graduate year.
Thesis Students
course: Thesis (4)
Non-Thesis Students
course: Masters Report (4)
A minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 is required for all core and elective courses in the program, including those taken as an undergraduate student.
Elective Coursework
Twelve (12) units of electives are required to complete the program, six (6) units of which must be from the following list:
course*: Sustainable Water Supplies for Remote Communities (3)
course: Emerging Issues in Water Quality (3)
course: Bioremediation on Inorganic Contaminants (2)
course: Interfacial Chemistry of Biomolecules in Environmental Systems (3)
course: Introduction to Hazardous Waste Management (3)
course: Analysis of Emerging Environmental Contaminants (3)
course: Water Reuse (3)
course*: Advanced Water and Wastewater Treatment (3)
* Because Environmental Engineering undergraduate students take CHEE 476 Wastewater Treatment System Design during their junior year, those students will take course as a core course for the MS and will not be able to use it as an elective.
The six (6) additional units of electives may be taken from a combination of electives, research and independent study courses at the discretion of the student and the student's faculty advisor/mentor.
All elective courses are determined at the discretion of the individual student and the student's faculty advisor/mentor, usually relevant to the student's research.
Additional Requirements
All CHEE graduate students are required to register and attend course, the CHEE Graduate Seminar (1 unit), each semester that they are in the program. AMP students will register for course during each semester of their graduate year.
