Completion requirement

Transfer units

  • Up to 30 units from a master’s degree may be transferred from other accredited institutions. To transfer, the coursework must have been taken for graduate credit, and an A or B grade must have been earned. These grades will not be included in the student’s GPA .

Qualifying Examination

  • Each prospective candidate for a doctoral degree must pass a qualifying examination in the proposed major field. The qualifying examination is typically scheduled to take place on Tuesday in the first week of each Spring Semester. The qualifying examination must be taken during the first year of residency.

Completion requirement

9-12 units minimum

  • GPA 3.5

  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA during M.S. study for Ph.D. Program

  • Minimum TOEFL score of 79 (iBT)(CBT = 213)  or IELTS-composite score of 7 (no subject area below 6).  (For international students only)

The minor subject area may be taken within or outside of the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics. The student may choose one or two minor areas, which are determined in consultation with his/her Academic Advisor. The department in which the minor is sought determines specific requirements. The minimum number of minor coursework is nine (9) units, but most minor programs require twelve (12) units of coursework. A minor in Civil Engineering or Engineering Mechanics requires twelve (12) units.
