CORE COURSEWORK (27 units)

  • course: Introduction to GIS for Urban Planning (4)

  • course: Public Participation and Dispute Resolution (3)

  • course Comprehensive Planning and Land Use Controls (3)

Elective Coursework: 6 units (see elective section below)

This program includes competencies and core skills that may be demonstrated through coursework in an undergraduate related degree such as a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning; courses can be reviewed for comparative competencies by reviewing samples of work, projects, or references along with grades of A or B. Competency may also be demonstrated by extensive and relevant applied professional experience. This will be reviewed by faculty based on references, resume, and CV review. If competency is confirmed, students must complete 33 units at a minimum . However, if competencies are not met, students may be required to complete the following additional coursework to ensure success in the field.

FOCUS COURSEWORK: Select nine units of a primary focus and six units of secondary focus (15 units total) from the following areas:

ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING

  • course: Sustainable Urban Development & Design (3)

  • course: Climate Action Planning (3)

  • course: Environmental Planning (3)

URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

  • course: Urban Transportation Planning (3)

  • course: Applied Active Transportation Planning (3)

  • course: Transportation and Society (3)

HOUSING AND REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT

  • course: Land Development Process (3) - required

  • course: Intro to Real Estate Finance (3) - required

  • course: Due Diligence and Entitlements (3) - option

  • course: Affordable Housing and Community Development (3) - option

HERITAGE CONSERVATION

  • course: Intro to Heritage Conservation (3)

  • course: Preservation Planning Issues (3)

  • course: Documentation & Interpretation of the Historic Built Environment (3)

INDEPENDENT FOCUS

Nine units of coursework from the list above in consultation with faculty advisor.
